Access to Information Act (ATI)
The basic principles of the Access to Information Act (ATI) are:
1. Any person has a right of access to the records in the custody or under the control of a public body subject to specific and limited exceptions.
2. Allows individuals a right to access personal information about themselves, subject to specific and limited exceptions.
3. Provides for independent reviews of decisions made by public bodies and resolution of complaints under the ATI.
Before submitting an ATI Request
- Do research and determine if you need to make an ATI request.
- Search publicly available government records at alberta.ca/transparency-alberta
- Find more government records, data, and publications through Alberta’s Open Government Program – alberta.ca/open-government-program
- Request from program areas or search public body websites.
Right to Request Information
Under the ATI – Access to Information Act & POP – Protection of Privacy Act, any person has the right to request information that is in the custody and control of the City of Chestermere, including their own personal information. Individuals may also request a correction of their personal information if it is inexact, ambiguous or incomplete.

Please be specific in your request and give as much detail as possible in relation to the records you want to access, the department you believe has the records and the time period of the records you are requesting.
Types of Requests
- General access to information request: information that is not about an identifiable person.
- Personal access to information request: recorded information about yourself or a person you are authorized to act for
- Request to make a change to your personal information.
