LAKE WEED WEDNESDAYS
JULY 9 – SEPTEMBER 24
• Lake weeds will be collected on Wednesdays from July 9 to September 24.
• Carts need to be placed at the curbside by 7am.
• Only lake weeds may be put in carts on “Lake Weed Wednesdays”.
• Please do not add yard waste or organics to your lake weed cart(s) or they will not be picked up. Operators will be auditing carts during collection. Contaminated carts will be tagged and not collected.
The regular household curbside waste collection day will not change. Regulations are outlined in the City of Chestermere Waste Management Bylaw No.-024-22.
LAKE WEED CARTS
The green lake weed carts are designed with proper drainage for the weeds; draining the water reduces the weight of the cart and facilitates the composting process. As such, the 360L carts with holes in the bottom are specifically for this purpose only.
Please call us if you wish to return your cart.
LAKE WEED COLLECTION PROGRAM
Once again, from July 1 – August 31, the City’s large orange harvesters will cut and remove lake weeds to ensure that Chestermere Lake remains safe for recreational activities and to avoid clogging the irrigation system.
If you aren’t familiar with the program, operators follow a schedule based on the historical prevalence and location of weeds. Although they typically adhere to a regular route, you may see them adjust their route to focus on floating weed masses and known dense areas of weeds. We also work with residents who experience extremely large amounts of weeds to find collaborative solutions.
Cut lake weeds are composted and the compost is used in City parks and available to residents free of charge at the Eco Centre. Visit thecityofchestermere.ca/residentialservices/recycling-garbage for details. On average, about 225 tons of lake weeds are converted into compost material annually!
