Governance And Priorities Committee Meeting
Moments of Reflection
Mayor Dean recognized the Chestermere Lakers football team for achieving their first-ever 5–0 season, congratulating players, coaches, and supporters for their hard work and community spirit.
Council members and representatives from various committees and boards presented updates and recommendations. As this was the last Council meeting before the municipal election, these reports will support the incoming Council in setting priorities and making informed decisions. The Committee accepted all reports for information.
Grant Adjudication Committee
Funded 26 projects across four grant streams, totaling $392,172, The committee will focus on strengthening advocacy, expanding community initiatives, and addressing funding and membership needs.
Chestermere Public Library Board
Maintained a full membership of 10 and is developing a new five-year Plan of Service and budget while preparing to welcome a new Director. Ongoing collaboration with Council and Administration continues to be a priority.
Lake and Watershed Committee
Continued work on the Lake and Watershed Management Plan and began developing a 2026–2027 strategy focused on protecting lake health through resident feedback, invasive species removal, and water monitoring.
Senior Advisory Committee
Reviewed the Seniors Handbook and provided input on recreation and transportation programs. Current priorities include attainable housing options and increased senior engagement in the community.
Chestermere Police Communications Committee
Supported public safety initiatives such as the License Plate Security Screw Program, which served more than 160 vehicles. The committee plans to expand education and increase resident participation in crime prevention.
Mayor’s Task Force for Recreation
Provided input on recreation planning, facility concepts, and programming. Recommended the formation of a standing recreation committee to guide future amenities and operations.
Chestermere Economic Development Advisory Committee
Contributed to the Beacon project and municipal development planning. The committee aims to adopt an Economic Development Plan by 2026 and increase local business participation.
Mayor’s Task Force for Non-Profits
Representing over 20 organizations, the task force advanced collaboration, grant awareness, and resource sharing. It recommends establishing a standing committee and exploring a Community Hub model to coordinate local services.
Chestermere Municipal Heritage Advisory Committee
Completed its first year by establishing leadership and priorities and partnering with the Historical Foundation on preservation projects. The committee will continue documenting and protecting local heritage assets.
Wheatland Regional Emergency Management Partnership (WREMP)
Maintained regional collaboration on emergency preparedness and will begin implementing the Alberta Incident Management System. Training and intermunicipal coordination remain core priorities.
Marigold Library System Board
Supports 37 libraries across 42 municipalities, including Chestermere. Current priorities include approving the 2026–2030 Plan of Service and addressing funding and inflation-related challenges.
Community Futures Wild Rose
Since 1989, has provided $2.7 million in business loans within Chestermere, including $500,000 during this term. The organization continues to support local entrepreneurship and small business development.
Chestermere Chamber of Commerce
Continues to support local businesses through networking, advocacy, and member programs. With a new administrator, the Chamber is focusing on strengthening outreach and collaboration.
Alberta Mid-Sized Cities Mayor’s Caucus (MCMC)
Represents 24 municipalities across Alberta to advance shared advocacy and mentorship. The caucus continues to develop collaborative solutions relevant to mid-sized cities.
Sustainability and Environment Committee
Addresses environmental and water issues affecting Alberta municipalities. Participation allows Chestermere to advocate for local priorities and remain informed on emerging provincial policy directions.
Airport Community Consultative Committee
Provides updates from YYC on flight paths and safety initiatives. It was recommended that future participation transition to administration for improved operational alignment.
Election Update
Committee received the 2025 Election Update for information. Election Day is October 20, with advance voting available at City Hall on October 11, 17, and 18. Three school locations will serve as voting stations on Election Day.
School and Recreation Updates
Construction continues on the new Catholic K–9 school on West Lakeview Drive. The paving of Merganser Drive in front of the future high school is complete, with utility and lighting work underway. The City has also finalized the purchase of 160 acres for recreation purposes, including the CRCA lands, Lakeside Greens Golf Course, and a future recreation centre in Dawson’s Landing.
