On Sunday, May 11, 2025, a Chestermere Peace Officer stopped a vehicle traveling at more than double the posted speed limit within city limits.
At approximately 9:20 a.m., while patrolling the area of Township Road 241A near Range Road 281, a Peace Officer observed an orange BMW accelerating rapidly away from Township Road 241A toward Range Road 281. The posted speed limit in this area is 60 km/h.
Using the patrol vehicle’s radar, the officer recorded the BMW’s speed at 146 km/h in the 60 km/h zone. The vehicle was rapidly approaching another motorist who was safely slowing down at the stop signs near Range Road 281. The BMW was seen braking heavily in an effort to stop in time.
A traffic stop was conducted, and the driver safely pulled over. A male resident of Chestermere, Alberta, is now facing charges under the Traffic Safety Act, including speeding and careless driving. He is scheduled to appear in court at the end of July.
This kind of driving behavior poses a serious danger not only to other motorists, but also to pedestrians and cyclists who use this roadway. As warmer weather returns, Chestermere Municipal Enforcement reminds all road users of the importance of traffic safety. Peace Officers will be actively patrolling and focusing on public safety, targeting excessive speed and other dangerous driving behaviors throughout the city.
