The City of Chestermere has introduced updated rules for election signs to improve safety, reduce clutter, and make expectations clear for both residents and candidates. The new standards will be in effect for the upcoming municipal election on Monday, October 20, 2025.
What’s new:
- Signs on public land cannot be larger than 1.5 m².
- Signs may only be installed thirty days before election day and must be removed within three days after.
- Placement rules prevent signs from blocking driver sightlines, being too close to intersections, or obstructing hydrants.
These rules apply only to public spaces such as boulevards and road rights-of-way. Signs on private property are governed by the provincial Local Authorities Election Act and require the consent of the property owner.
“Residents told us they were concerned about oversized and poorly placed signs that created hazards and clutter in our community,” said Kent Edney, Chief Administrative Officer. “These new rules respond directly to that feedback. They set clear expectations for candidates and ensure that elections in Chestermere are conducted in a way that is safe, fair, and respectful of public spaces.”
The new rules are set out in the following bylaws:
Both take effect immediately and will guide election signage in Chestermere moving forward.
