Chestermere RCMP reminds residents to stay visible and cautious during winter walks
Chestermere, Alta. – As daylight hours shorten and winter roads become icy, the Chestermere RCMP is reminding everyone to take extra care when walking near traffic. Fewer daylight hours, snow, and slippery conditions can increase the risk of accidents involving pedestrians.
Pedestrians can stay safer by following these tips:
- Wear bright or reflective clothing to be more visible to drivers, especially at dawn, dusk, and in poor weather.
- Use sidewalks whenever possible. If none are available, walk facing traffic and stay as far from the roadway as you can.
- Stay alert and avoid distractions, such as using your phone or headphones, while walking near roads.
- Cross streets at designated crosswalks and always look both ways, even on familiar routes.
- Be cautious on icy or snow-covered paths, as slips can put you in harm’s way near traffic.
Drivers also play a role in pedestrian safety:
- Reduce speed in residential areas and school zones.
- Watch for pedestrians, especially in low-light conditions.
- Give extra space on icy roads, where stopping distances are longer.
- Don’t drive distracted. When roads are slippery, you need to stay alert.
The Chestermere RCMP reminds residents that if you witness a crime in progress or see suspicious activity, call 9-1-1 immediately. For non-emergencies, you can:
- Call 310-RCMP (7267)
- To report online, download the Alberta RCMP app through Apple or Google Play. Alternatively, visit rcmp-grc.gc.ca/ab and select Online Crime Reporting under quick links.
