Coyotes in Chestermere

By January 28, 2025Newsflash

Coyotes have been observed within the city limits, walking the perimeter of Chestermere Lake and near West Chestermere Drive.

Coyotes are usually shy around humans but can become habituated to people and lose their natural fear. Coyotes are often attracted to areas with a nearby food source. If you regularly see coyotes on your property, it’s likely a result of a nearby food source.

Coyotes are very adaptable, and most of their diet consists of fruit, birds, small rodents, and dog feces. These types of food sources can often attract rodents, which coyotes depend on for food.

If you encounter a coyote in an urban setting, you must discourage the animal from returning. Coyotes can be easily scared by waving brooms or sticks or making noise in their general direction. If you encounter coyotes on your property, do not ignore them.

How can I help to reduce or avoid problems with coyotes?
  • Do not approach or feed coyotes.
  • Clean and maintain outdoor cooking areas.
  • Remove compost, garbage, and other potential food sources, and store them in proper receptacles.
  • Clean up after pets, even in your own yard.
  • Keep watch and, if possible, accompany your pet in the yard, especially at night.
What should I do if I encounter a coyote?
  • Do NOT run or turn away.
  • Scare the animal by shouting and waving your arms.
  • Wave sticks or bang them together towards the animal.
  • Maintain eye contact and back away slowly.
