Lockbox Program
Chestermere Fire Department is transitioning from the Supra (TRACcess) lockbox system to the Knox Box system. Existing Supra lockboxes must be upgraded or replaced by December 31, 2026 to remain compliant with Fire Department emergency access requirements, and the National Fire Code Alberta Edition B.2.5.1.3. Fire Department Building Access.
Honeywell has discontinued the Supra lockbox product line and will end support for these products. To ensure firefighters and other emergency responders continue to have reliable access to buildings and critical life safety systems during emergencies, all affected properties must transition to an approved Knox Box solution.
A lock box provides emergency responders with secure, rapid access to a building when access is restricted or the building is unoccupied. Quick access can reduce response times, minimize property damage, and improve firefighter and occupant safety during an emergency.
Who Requires a Lockbox?
A lockbox is required for buildings that contain any of the following:
- Fire alarm systems where:
- Alarm controls are located behind locked doors;
- Manual reset devices require a key or access device;
- Electrical breakers serving the fire alarm system are located in a locked room or panel.
- Automatic sprinkler systems where:
- Main control valves are locked in the open position; or
- Control valves are located in locked rooms or enclosures.
- Standpipe systems located in locked rooms or areas.
- Elevator firefighter emergency controls requiring a key.
- Locked stairwell doors.
- Locked roof access doors.
- Other buildings as required by Chestermere Fire Services or the Alberta Fire Code.
For multi-tenant buildings, such as strip malls, one lockbox per building is generally sufficient.
Transition from Supra to Knox
All existing Supra lockboxes must be replaced or retrofitted with an approved Knox solution.
Important Dates
Order Deadline: October 30, 2026
Compliance Deadline: December 31, 2026
After December 31, 2026, non-compliant lockboxes may result in enforcement action and could delay emergency response.

Lockbox Installation Requirements
The lockbox must be:
- Installed near the principal entrance or another approved location.
- Mounted between 1.2 m and 1.8 m (4 ft to 6 ft) above finished grade.
- Clearly visible and accessible to firefighters.
- Free from obstruction at all times.
If you are unsure of the appropriate mounting location, contact Chestermere Fire Services before installation.
Required Contents
Lockboxes must contain all keys, fobs, cards, and devices necessary to access:
- Main building entrances
- Fire alarm systems
- Sprinkler systems
- Elevator systems
- Locked stairwells
- Roof access doors
All keys and devices must be secured to a key ring and clearly labeled.
