Annual observances and illuminations
Each year the City marks a calendar of proclamations, building illuminations, and flag protocols — ranging from national heritage months to local observances. This calendar is maintained by Legislative Services in consultation with the Mayor.
The City Hall exterior lights are used as a ceremonial tool to mark significant occasions. Illumination requests from external organizations are subject to the same eligibility criteria as proclamation requests, with a maximum of one illumination per organization per calendar year.
Flags at City facilities may be flown at half-mast for significant occasions as directed by the Chief Administrative Officer, in accordance with provincial protocol.

Members of Council and City Administration may also initiate recognition requests internally. Certificates of Recognition must be requested by a Member of Council through the Office of the Mayor.
Eligibility and timelines
All requests must have a meaningful connection to the City of Chestermere or its residents, contribute positively to community life, and reflect the values of an inclusive and respectful community.
Proclamation requests must fall within at least one of the following tiers:
Tier 1 — Observances formally recognized by the Government of Canada (Canadian Heritage) or the Province of Alberta (Special Days Act). Tier 1 status makes a request eligible; it does not guarantee issuance.
Requests must be submitted at least four weeks before the requested recognition date. Exceptions may be granted at the discretion of the Manager of Legislative Services.
Requests that do not meet the eligibility criteria will be declined in writing. Declined requests may be resubmitted if the grounds for refusal have been addressed.
Recognition documents are ceremonial in nature and do not constitute financial commitment, legal endorsement, or partnership with the City of Chestermere.
Personal information collected through this form is collected under the authority of Section 4(c) of the Protection of Privacy Act, SA 2024, c P-28.5, and will be used solely for the purpose of processing your recognition request. Questions may be directed to the City’s Privacy Coordinator.
