The City of Chestermere has begun necessary upgrades to Rainbow Road Bridge. The old bridge on Rainbow Road was approximately 50 years old and had reached the end of its service life. The new Rainbow Road Bridge over the canal will be widened to accommodate additional capacity and provide 2 travel lanes each way across the canal.
The City’s Contractor (Volker Stevin Highways Ltd.) will mobilize back to the Rainbow Road Bridge site on Monday, February 10th and work till end of the day Tuesday February 11th to complete the instream rip rap and pier removal (weather permitting).
Work will commence at 7:00 am and end by 7:00 pm on each day. There will be an occasional single-lane closure on the new bridge with flaggers alternating traffic between the hours of 9:00am – 5:00 pm to avoid disrupting motorists during high peak hours. This traffic disruption will only occur when equipment and materials are being delivered to and from the work site.
Traffic Management
Traffic Accommodation:
-
- One lane of the new bridge will be temporarily closed at a time, only when equipment and material are being delivered to and from the site.
- Flaggers will be stationed at each end of the bridge to ensure the safe and orderly flow of vehicles across the bridge when single lane closures are implemented.
Timings to Minimize Disruption:
-
- Work hours will be scheduled between 7:00 AM and 7:00 PM with occasional single lane closures occurring between 9:00 AM and 5:00 PM.
- By avoiding peak traffic periods (early morning and late evening rush hours), this schedule minimizes inconvenience for commuters and motorists using the bridge.
Weather Dependency:
The planned mobilization and work are contingent on favorable weather conditions. Heavy snow, or other adverse weather could delay or temporarily suspend operations, as safety is the top priority during such activities.
