Strategic investment positions City for long-term community benefit
Chestermere, AB – Chestermere City Council has approved the purchase of the lands at the Chestermere Regional Recreation Centre, authorizing administration to proceed with final steps toward full municipal ownership of the property.
“This purchase isn’t just about ownership, it’s about unlocking what’s next,” said Mayor Shannon Dean. “It gives us the space, the control, and the momentum to shape recreation in a way that truly serves our community.”
This milestone gives the City greater ability to plan, invest in, and enhance recreation services based on what residents have consistently said they need most.
Paying for it Responsibly: Reinvesting in Community
The purchase price for the Recreation Centre lands is $8.2 million (subject to standard closing adjustments). To fund the acquisition, Council directed the use of dollars from the City’s investment portfolio, which includes funds currently held in low-return principal secured investments.
By redirecting those dollars toward community infrastructure, the City is:
- Avoiding debt
- Maximizing public benefit
- And reinvesting local money into local priorities
“Rather than letting that money sit with a low return, we’re investing it in people, families, and the community we’re building together,” said Mayor Dean.
No Disruption to Services
The Chestermere Regional Community Association (CRCA) will continue to operate the Recreation Centre under the existing lease agreement, ensuring uninterrupted programming and facility access for residents. Any future changes to programming or operations will be explored collaboratively.
Looking Ahead
This land purchase is one part of a larger recreation strategy guided by the 2024 Recreation Needs Assessment and ongoing community feedback. Planning is already underway for new amenities including aquatics and inclusive multi-use facilities, with a phased and fiscally responsible approach to growth.
The City will continue to provide updates and invite public input as the future of recreation in Chestermere takes shape.
