On Monday, September 8, the City will begin performing unidirectional flushing in Chestermere communities.
What is unidirectional flushing?
Unidirectional flushing (UDF) is part of our regular preventative maintenance on the drinking water distribution system. This process helps maintain the quality of our drinking water and protects the integrity of the water pipes.
UDF works by opening and closing specific valves and fire hydrants to move water quickly in a single direction. This high-velocity flow helps clear out built-up minerals and sediments. During flushing, you may notice a brief drop in water pressure or a temporary change in water colour.
What to expect:
- Crews will be releasing high volumes of water from hydrants and monitoring progress.
- Large amounts of water will flow into the street and down the storm drains.
- There will be no impact to water services.
- Please be mindful of crews working in your neighbourhood and give them space so they can complete the work safely.
Some benefits of UDF include:
- Improving water quality in water mains
- Reducing bacterial growth
- Lowering the risk of water contamination
- Improving water colour and clarity
- Controlling pipe corrosion
- Helping restore flow and pressure in the system
