Council Recognitions and Announcements
Council recognized the appointment of Councillor Robert Schindler as Deputy Mayor and thanked outgoing Deputy Mayor Narayan for his service over the past eight months.
The Chestermere Historical Foundation presented its new public art display featuring replica plaques from the former Summer Village and Town of Chestermere. The plaques are on display at City Hall for public viewing before their installation later this summer.
Upcoming community events were highlighted including Canada Day celebrations on July 1 and the Lead by Example Powwow on July 8, both at John Peake Park.
Councillor Narayan also promoted the Police Communications Committee’s free Security Screw Program for licence plates, taking place June 27 in the Safeway parking lot.
Council directed Administration to provide a response to the Committee’s request regarding e-scooter safety communications at the July 14, 2026, Regular Meeting of Council.
Awards and Proclamations
Council accepted the Canadian Multiculturalism Day Proclamation for information. The proclamation recognizes June 27, 2026, as Canadian Multiculturalism Day and celebrates the contributions of diverse communities to Chestermere and across Canada.
Public Input
Two residents provided public input regarding the Transitional Rural Residential (TRR) District. Council accepted the comments for information.
Chestermere Municipal Heritage Advisory Committee Recommendations
Administration (Legislative Services), on behalf of the Chestermere Municipal Heritage Advisory Committee, presented recommendations related to heritage preservation and community celebration initiatives. Council directed Administration to install display cabinets in the City Hall lobby to showcase historical artifacts and to include a 50-year anniversary event in the 2027 Events Calendar.
Creating Access and Partnering in Recreation Policy
Administration (Community Operations) presented the proposed Creating Access and Partnering in Recreation Policy. The policy is intended to guide public access, partnerships and future recreation agreements on City-owned recreation lands. Council directed Administration to revise the policy based on feedback received and return with an updated version by the end of September 2026.
Graffiti and Art Wall Installation Viability
Administration (Strategic Services) presented a viability assessment for a community graffiti or art wall. The report concluded that successful programs are typically community-led and supported by municipalities rather than operated by them. Council directed Administration to issue an Expression of Interest for a community organization to lead the initiative and report back only if a suitable partner is identified.
Extension of Motions Deadline – Transit Service Work
Administration (Office of the CAO) presented a request to extend reporting timelines for two active transit-related motions. Additional time is required to complete funding analysis and discussions with regional partners. Council approved extending the reporting deadlines to September 2026.
City-Wide Facilities Planning Report
Administration (Office of the CAO) presented the City-Wide Facilities Planning Report. The report outlines a coordinated approach to future facility planning and identifies current and future space requirements across the organization. Council approved a $60,000 chain-link fence installation at the Community Operations site and accepted the report for information.
CRCA Facility Improvement Funding
Administration (Office of the CAO) presented a proposal to allocate up to $5,000 from previously approved funding to support lighting improvements within the Chestermere Regional Community Association facility. The motion was defeated.
City Hall Parking Lot Expansion Options
Administration (Community Growth and Infrastructure) presented options for expanding the City Hall parking lot. The report reviewed several design concepts and a short-term operational strategy to improve parking capacity. Council accepted the report for information.
Range Road 284 and Chestermere Boulevard Intersection Update
Administration (Community Growth and Infrastructure) provided an update on ongoing discussions with the City of Calgary regarding improvements to the intersection of Range Road 284 and Chestermere Boulevard. An interim traffic signal solution was identified as the preferred short-term option. Council accepted the update for information and approved an extension to the reporting timeline to allow for completion of cost-sharing discussions and budget analysis.
Rescindment of the Transitional Rural Residential District and Redesignation of Three Parcels
Administration (Community Growth and Infrastructure) presented Bylaw No. 018-26, proposing to remove the Transitional Rural Residential District and redesignate three parcels to the Country Residential District. The amendment is intended to provide more practical subdivision opportunities for affected acreage owners. Council gave first reading to Bylaw No. 018-26 and approved a public hearing for July 28, 2026, at 1 p.m.
Development Permit No. 26-22028/102 – Office Use at 288 Kinniburgh Blvd.
Administration (Community Growth and Infrastructure) presented Development Permit No. 26-22028/102 for office use within an existing commercial unit at 288 Kinniburgh Blvd. The application complies with all applicable Land Use Bylaw requirements and does not require variances. Council approved the development permit as presented.
Clearwater Park Split-Zoning Land Use Bylaw Amendment
Administration (Community Growth and Infrastructure) presented Bylaw No. 028-26 to eliminate split-zoning on a parcel within Clearwater Park. The amendment would redesignate the entire parcel to a single land use district to streamline future development approvals. Council gave first reading to Bylaw No. 028-26 and approved a public hearing for July 14, 2026, at 10 a.m.
City of Chestermere Official Land Acknowledgement
Administration (Legislative Services) presented a proposed corporate Land Acknowledgement for use at public events, official functions and committee meetings. The acknowledgement recognizes Treaty 7 territory and the Indigenous Peoples connected to the region. Council adopted the Land Acknowledgement as the corporate standard for all City representatives.
Public Member Committee Appointments
Administration (Legislative Services) presented recommendations to fill vacancies on several Council committees. Council appointed Cheryl Butterley to the Seniors Advisory Committee, Vicky Minhas to the Grant Adjudication Committee, and Holly MacDonald and Ron Rideout to the Lake and Watershed Advisory Committee. These appointments support committee operations and maintain quorum requirements.
