ORGANIZATIONS

Acknowledges a significant anniversary, a professional group, a notable commemoration, or a special event or conference in Chestermere.

Annual observances and illuminations

Each year the City marks a calendar of proclamations, building illuminations, and flag protocols — ranging from national heritage months to local observances. This calendar is maintained by Legislative Services in consultation with the Mayor.

The City Hall exterior lights are used as a ceremonial tool to mark significant occasions. Illumination requests from external organizations are subject to the same eligibility criteria as proclamation requests, with a maximum of one illumination per organization per calendar year.

Flags at City facilities may be flown at half-mast for significant occasions as directed by the Chief Administrative Officer, in accordance with provincial protocol.

View the current year’s full observances calendar in our past recognition registry, or submit a request to add an observance using the form below.

Who can apply

Requests may be submitted by:

A community organization based in or with a significant presence in Chestermere · An individual resident on behalf of a family member, neighbour, or community member · A parent or guardian submitting a Youth Recognition request on behalf of a young person · A local school on behalf of a student · A local chapter of a provincial or national organization hosting an event in Chestermere

Members of Council and City Administration may also initiate recognition requests internally. Certificates of Recognition must be requested by a Member of Council through the Office of the Mayor.

Eligibility and timelines

All requests must have a meaningful connection to the City of Chestermere or its residents, contribute positively to community life, and reflect the values of an inclusive and respectful community.

Proclamation requests must fall within at least one of the following tiers:

Tier 1 — Observances formally recognized by the Government of Canada (Canadian Heritage) or the Province of Alberta (Special Days Act). Tier 1 status makes a request eligible; it does not guarantee issuance.

Tier 2 — Observances not recognized under Tier 1, where the requesting party can demonstrate an active, documented organizational presence in Chestermere directly engaged in the cause.

Requests must be submitted at least four weeks before the requested recognition date. Exceptions may be granted at the discretion of the Manager of Legislative Services.

Requests that do not meet the eligibility criteria will be declined in writing. Declined requests may be resubmitted if the grounds for refusal have been addressed.

Recognition documents are ceremonial in nature and do not constitute financial commitment, legal endorsement, or partnership with the City of Chestermere.

Personal information collected through this form is collected under the authority of Section 4(c) of the Protection of Privacy Act, SA 2024, c P-28.5, and will be used solely for the purpose of processing your recognition request. Questions may be directed to the City’s Privacy Coordinator.

Public registry of recognition documents

The City maintains a public registry of all recognition documents issued, including proclamations, certificates of recognition, letters of recognition, and commendations. This registry is updated by Legislative Services following each issuance.

The registry will be published here following adoption of the Civic Recognition Policy. Past recognition documents issued under Policy 839 will be included for reference.

2026 observances calendar

The following is the City’s annual calendar of approved proclamations, observances, illuminations, and flag protocols for 2026. This calendar is maintained by Legislative Services in consultation with the Mayor.

The 2026 Schedule A observances calendar will appear here. It will include month-long celebrations (such as Black History Month, Pride Month, and National Indigenous History Month), week-long and single-day observances, illumination dates, and flag protocol dates — with the corresponding Council meeting at which each is being recognized.
