Agreement strengthens City’s ability to plan for future recreation and community growth
At the July 8, 2025 Council meeting, the City of Chestermere approved a conditional purchase agreement to acquire full ownership of the lands that house the Chestermere Regional Recreation Centre from Rocky View County. If finalized, the City would become the sole owner of the lands for this key site, positioning us to take a more unified and future-focused approach to recreation planning for our growing community.
This agreement marks an important step toward enhancing the City’s ability to manage, invest in, and eventually modernize one of our most valued community assets. It aligns with our long-term vision for recreation and would enable clearer governance, better land-use coordination, and more responsive service delivery.
We are grateful to Rocky View County for their decades of partnership, and to the Chestermere Regional Community Association (CRCA) for their ongoing leadership in facility operations and community programming. The CRCA will continue operating the Recreation Centre under the terms of their current lease agreement.
“For many families in Chestermere, this facility holds memories – skating lessons, tournaments, community celebrations,” said Mayor Shannon Dean. “By entering into this agreement, we’re not just negotiating a land deal, we’re laying the groundwork for a stronger, more responsive recreation future. It’s about investing in the people who use this space and ensuring it continues to serve our community well.”
This conditional agreement is part of a broader recreation strategy. Work continues on plans for a new future recreation facility, supported by the 2024 Recreation Needs Assessment and resident feedback. Priorities like aquatics, indoor courts, and multi-use spaces remain central to our vision.
Should the agreement proceed, the City will work closely with the CRCA and the broader community to ensure program continuity and a thoughtful, transparent transition. Residents will be kept informed as this process unfolds.
