Chestermere RCMP highlights fraud trends and prevention strategies, urges education for seniors
Chestermere, Alta., — The Alberta RCMP in Chestermere is advising residents to be vigilant as various fraud schemes continue to affect residents throughout the province. Albertans are encouraged to take steps to protect themselves and to help educate family, friends, and the elderly, who are often targeted by these crimes.
Common Fraud Schemes
The RCMP has identified several scams currently circulating in Alberta:
- Grandparent Scam: Callers claim to be a relative in urgent need of money for bail or medical expenses.
- Tech Support Scam: Victims are told their computer is compromised and asked to provide remote access or pay for unnecessary services.
- Government Impersonation: Scammers pose as CRA or RCMP officials, threatening arrest unless payment is made.
- Romance and Investment Scams: Fraudsters build online relationships or offer fake investment opportunities to solicit funds.
Prevention Tips
- Do not share personal or banking information over the phone or email.
- Confirm any request for money by contacting the person directly using a trusted number.
- Be cautious of unsolicited calls, texts, or emails.
- Report suspicious activity to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501.
Educating Seniors
Families and caregivers are encouraged to discuss fraud risks with older relatives. Community organizations can assist by:
- Hosting fraud awareness sessions at senior centres.
- Distributing printed guides with examples of common scams.
- Advising seniors to hang up on suspicious calls and seek advice before sending money.
