A recent traffic stop by Chestermere Peace Officers is reinforcing the importance of slowing down and following posted speed limits.
At approximately 12:24 p.m. on Saturday, September 19, a Peace Officer stopped a vehicle travelling 202 km/h on Range Road 284, where the posted speed limit is 80 km/h. The driver stopped without incident.
A Chestermere resident has been charged with speeding and careless driving and is scheduled to appear in court. Peace Officers are working with the RCMP to determine whether a Criminal Code charge of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle is warranted.
This is one of more than 50 incidents in 2026 in which Chestermere Peace Officers have stopped drivers travelling at least 51 km/h above the posted speed limit. Two fatal collisions have also occurred on highways within Chestermere this year.
Travelling at excessive speeds leaves significantly less time to respond to changing road conditions, other vehicles and unexpected hazards. The faster a vehicle is travelling, the greater the potential consequences in a collision.
Peace Officers will continue enforcement throughout Chestermere to address excessive speeding and other dangerous driving behaviours. Drivers are reminded to follow posted speed limits, drive for the conditions and help keep our roads safe.
