Chestermere RCMP reminding motorists about commercial vehicle safety in June
Chestermere, Alta. – RCMP in Alberta are reminding motorists to take extra care when sharing the road with commercial vehicles. During June, officers will focus enforcement and education efforts on safe driving behaviours around large trucks and buses.
Commercial vehicles are significantly larger and heavier than passenger vehicles and require more time and distance to stop. Limited visibility and wide turning requirements can increase the risk of serious collisions when other drivers fail to adjust their behaviour.
Commercial vehicle safety tips:
- Large trucks have significant blind spots on all sides. If you cannot see the driver in their mirrors, they may not be able to see you.
- Leave extra space when following commercial vehicles, as they require longer stopping distances, particularly when fully loaded.
- Avoid cutting in front of trucks when changing lanes, which can force sudden braking and increase collision risk.
- Be aware that commercial vehicles often need to swing wide to complete turns safely.
- Pass only when safe and legal, and ensure you can see the entire vehicle in your rearview mirror before merging back into the lane.
The Chestermere RCMP reminds residents that if you witness a crime in progress or see suspicious activity, call 9-1-1 immediately. For non-emergencies, you can:
- Call 310-RCMP (7267)
- To report online, download the Alberta RCMP app through Apple or Google Play. Alternatively, visit rcmp-grc.gc.ca/ab and select Online Crime Reporting under quick links.
