Chestermere RCMP remind drivers how to safely exit parking lots and service roads
Chestermere, Alta. – Exiting a parking lot or service road may seem routine, but these manoeuvres require drivers to pay close attention to traffic, pedestrians and road conditions. Chestermere RCMP are reminding motorists that failing to yield properly or rushing into traffic can lead to serious collisions.
In many communities, drivers may be focused on finding their destination and overlook the need to stop, check for traffic and wait for a safe opening. Taking a few extra moments before entering a roadway can help prevent unnecessary crashes and keep everyone safe.
Chestermere RCMP remind motorists to:
- Come to a complete stop at every stop sign and before entering the roadway.
- Be patient and allow the vehicle with the right-of-way to proceed first.
- Avoid waving other drivers through, as this can create confusion and increase the risk of a collision.
- Watch for pedestrians, cyclists and other vulnerable road users before entering the intersection.
- Never assume other drivers have seen you or will obey the rules of the road.
- Watch for vehicles turning into or out of nearby driveways, intersections or lanes.
- Only proceed when there is a safe gap in traffic and you can enter without forcing other drivers to brake or swerve.
- Always yield to traffic on the roadway when exiting a parking lot, driveway or service road.
- Come to a complete stop before crossing a sidewalk, lane or roadway.
- Avoid rolling through exits without checking both directions.
- Use extra caution in poor weather, at night or when visibility is reduced.
