Starting October 1, 2026, Chestermere residents will be able to recycle more everyday packaging in their blue carts or at the Eco Centre.
Newly accepted materials will include:
- Household aerosol containers
- Glass containers
- Foam packaging
- Flexible plastic packaging
- Laminated paper and plastic packaging
This includes items such as glass bottles and jars, foam meat trays and takeout containers, bread and produce bags, chip and snack bags, plastic wrap, beverage cups, cartons, and more.
All in one cart. No sorting required.
What does this mean for curbside collection?
The City will continue to collect residential recycling curbside. Beginning October 1, the newly accepted materials can be placed in your blue cart or brought to the Eco Centre.
Preparing your recycling
Before placing items in your blue cart:
- Empty containers and packaging.
- Bundle plastic bags together.
- Flatten cardboard and boxboard.
- Place shredded paper in a tied, clear plastic bag.
- Remove film wrap and absorbent pads from foam meat trays.
Why is the list of accepted materials expanding?
The expanded list is part of Alberta’s Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) recycling system. Circular Materials manages the recycling of packaging and paper products on behalf of producers in Alberta.
The Chestermere Recycles app and online sorting tool will be updated to reflect the expanded list of accepted materials.
